Hapé ceremony… the Sacred Tobacco of the Amazon

Hapé (sometimes called Rapé)

Is offered as a ritual of grounding… supporting clarity, emotional regulation, and reconnection with the body,  breath, and spirit.

The Intention of This Ceremony

Hapé is the preparation of powdered medicinal herbs, often with a tobacco or Mapacho base.

Hapé is used by the indigenous tribes of South America for a deep connection to the spirits, animals, and Mother Nature. It can be very cleansing and powerfully healing.

Participants often experience:

  • Grounding and stability
  • Mental clarity and reduced internal chatter
  • Emotional release or gentle clearing
  • Spiritual connection
  • Reconnection with breath, body, and intention

Each experience is unique. Some feel strong physical sensations, while others notice subtle emotional or energetic shifts.

The Spirit of Hapé

Hapé is made from finely powdered blends of jungle plants, ashes, and most importantly, sacred tobacco known as Mapacho, a potent variety of Jungle Tobacco that is revered as carrying the spirit of the Grandfather.

This medicine has been used for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years by shamans and healers in the Amazon to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit, prepare for ceremonies, and deepen connection to nature, the elements, and the ancestral world.

This Grandfather spirit is known for offering protection, clarity, grounding, and spiritual strength. Working with Hapéh is considered a direct form of communion with this wise masculine presence, one that helps remove energetic blockages, cleanse the mind, and anchor the body in presence.

Receiving Hapé is more than a physiological act. It is an exchange of intention. When self-administered or applied by another person, the medicine is delivered through breath, carrying the focus and presence of the giver.

How the Hapé Ceremony is Held

The Hapé Ceremony

Hapé ceremonies are held in a quiet, intentional container, designed to support safety, consent, and emotional and nervous system regulation.

The ceremony begins with grounding… often through silence, breathwork, or prayer. Participants are invited to arrive slowly and set a personal intention.

This may be a release, a prayer, or simply an openness to listen inwardly.

Hapé is administered gently through the nostrils using a traditional applicator or, when appropriate, through self-administration. Both sides are typically served to support energetic balance.

Following the application, participants remain seated in stillness. There is no speaking, processing, or analysis during this time. The focus is on breath, sensation, and allowing the medicine to move naturally through the system.

The ceremony closes with gratitude and grounding, helping participants integrate the experience and return fully to the present moment.

Relationship to Other Plant Medicines

Relationship to Other Plant Medicines

Within some ceremonial contexts, Hapé may be offered as a supportive practice alongside other plant medicines, including psilocybin.

When used this way, it is never intended to intensify or push an experience deeper.

Instead, Hapé functions as a threshold medicine… helping participants ground, clarify intention, and orient themselves before or after more expansive inner work.

It supports embodiment and integration rather than stimulation.

All use is guided by consent, education, and respect for individual readiness and boundaries.

Grounding, Regulation, and Embodied Healing

One of the reasons Hapé is offered is its ability to support embodied regulation. In shamanic healing work, grounding is essential… especially for those who are sensitive, empathic, or prone to dissociation or overwhelm.

Hapé may support:

  • Nervous system regulation
  • Emotional regulation
  • Reconnection with the physical body
  • A sense of safety and inner steadiness
  • Spiritual connection

Because of these qualities, Hapé is often used at the beginning or end of ceremonies, healing sessions, or retreats… supporting arrival, transition, and integration.

If this ceremony resonates, you’re welcome to take your time. When it feels right, I invite you to reach out with questions and learn more about upcoming Hapé offerings. I offer single or group ceremonies.

Whether experienced as part of a retreat, ceremony, or standalone offering.

This practice is always optional and held with care, consent, and respect for individual readiness.

I’m here to support you in exploring whether this grounding ceremony aligns with your path at this time.
